As of 2006, the Global Climate Change Program was ended because of a reduction in the number of programs under the responsibility of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The actions of the former Global Climate Change Program were incorporated by the Program for Science, Technology and Innovation for Nature and Climate and by the Program for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Management.

The Program for Science, Technology and Innovation for Nature and Climate took over the action of Research and Development on Global Climate Change, which calls for the development of research and studies aimed at obtaining information on sectoral emission factors and activities levels in order to improve the preparation of the Brazilian inventory of greenhouse gas emissions; research and studies in technology areas that aim at mitigating greenhouse gas emissions or monitoring such emissions; research for the development of parameters for general circulation models with ocean-atmosphere coupling. The Program for Science, Technology and Innovation for Nature and Climate is accountable to the Research and Development Policies and Programs Secretariat (SEPED) of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The Program for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Management took over the remaining actions previously under the responsibility of the Global Climate Change program, which are:

National inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, which includes the periodical preparation of the national annual inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and development of research into emission factors and activity levels in the sectors of energy, industry, solvent use, agriculture, land-use change and forestry, and waste treatment; Operacionalization of the Clean Development Mechanism, which will make it possible to assess the contribution to sustainable development of projects submitted to the Interministerial Commission on Global Climate Change under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol; build the capacity of institutions and specialists in the area of global climate change; contract studies; and conduct technical visits to projects approved by the Interministerial Commission; and Functioning of the Interministerial Commission on Global Climate Change (non-budgetary action), which will maintain the activities of the Interministerial Commission on Global Climate Change, including convening meetings and building the capacity of the Executive Secretariat of the Commission.
