Under this partnership, an agreement was signed in 2000 between MCT and INPE/CPTEC for the development of the project “Possible anthropogenic climate change scenarios for South America”, which includes the preparation of a technical study aiming at: a) developing regional numerical modeling of climate changes for Latin America with the use of climate scenarios provided by global climate models made available by IPCC for different greenhouse gas emission rates; and b) preparing regional climate change scenarios with high spatial resolution for several regions of the country, using the CPTEC regional model (Eta Model) at the horizontal resolution of 40 km and 40 vertical levels. The budget for this project was set at R$ 720,000 (seven hundred and twenty thousand reals), of which R$ 360,000 (three hundred and sixty thousand reals) are to be provided by MCT/Climate Change Program and the remaining value of R$ 360,000 (three hundred and sixty thousand reals) by the partner institutions. A timeframe of 4 (four) years was established for the preparation of this study. However, the budget for this action underwent several cuts that prevented the allocation of resources as established in the agreed workplan, as well as the conclusion of the study as planned. So attempts to obtain external financing were made viewing to continue the work of regional climate modeling.
