Sustainability in mining is the main focus of the activities run by the Centre for Mineral Technology (Cetem / MCTI) at Rio+20, which includes the launch on Friday (June 15) of the institutions hotsite and the launch of two publications on technology, environmental planning and management (one in Portuguese and one in English).
At Warehouse 3, organized by the Study and Project Finance Program (FINEP / MCTI), Cetem presents the Sustainable Brazil Expo, at which it will show how waste generated from the extraction and processing of ornamental stone can be used in asphalt paving, minimizing environmental impacts. Later on, the Juliano Peres Barbosa Experimental Station presents studies on dry coverage to reclaim degraded areas
At Warehouse 4, organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Cetem puts on the Our World Is Also Mineral exhibition, which will show how Brazilian gems, rocks and minerals used by industry have an impact on people’s daily lives. The goal is to stress to visitors the importance of the rational use of nonrenewable resources. Games, comic books and an illustrated periodic table updated to include the latest applications of the elements in the lanthanides (rare earths) group will be handed out. The Athletes Park will have governmental and intergovernmental exhibitions.
